CLOSE EMBRACE: COMFORT, FUNCTION & AESTHETICS

For leaders, followers & couples

With Veronica Toumanova, Silvia Bivolaru and Winston Veerender

Tango Amistoso + Verotango

If you ask any tango dancer what tango is really about, most people will say “the embrace”. Indeed, embrace is not only what makes Argentine tango possible as a dance, it is also what we remember most vividly from our best tandas, what we look for in a partner and what makes or breaks the experience for us.

A comfortable, functioning and nicely looking embrace requires a lot of work, understanding and tweaking. In this workshop we will talk about the different kinds of embraces and concentrate specifically on CLOSE EMBRACE: how to create one that is nice for both partners, respects your own anatomy and transmits information from the leader to the follower and back organically.

The workshop will consist of the following parts:

1. General introduction: what we mean by “embrace” in Argentine Tango and what kinds of embraces we can identify.

2. Body awareness exercises for posture, arms and upper back, in order to create an embrace that is natural and effortless, without excess tension.

3. Solo exercises to practice a comfortable and efficient embrace while walking and pivoting on your own. Understanding presence in biomechanical terms.

4. Couple exercises for dancing comfortably in close embrace. Understanding connection through the embrace while walking and dancing common figures such as salida, pivots and paradas.
