Workshop 1 - Pre-milonga Workshop
Theme: Finding your milonguero groove
Description: Dancing in a particular style means moving within a specific aesthetical and interpretational framework. We have all heard the style names such as "salon", "milonguero", "nuevo". For most people their dance is a fusion of various styles because tango has always evolved organically and even chaotically. In this workshop we will look for the "milonguero" groove in our close embrace dancing. A style is never just a collection of figures, it is a recognisably different way of dancing those figures. Our inspiration for this class will be the dynamic and fun "contemporary" milonguero style, with a special focus on dancing to tango orchestras like Donato, Tipica Victor and Canaro.
Level: Intermediate/Advanced
Time: 8.30pm to 9.30pm
Address: 10 Herbal Hill, EC1R 5EG

Followed by Milonga Negracha until 3am.

Saturday, May 11 2024
Workshop 2 - Advanced level workshop
Theme: Melodical expression through movement
Description: In tango we can interpret the rhythmic structure but this will always result in a general approach to musical interpretation, in other words, in dancing more or less the same way to every song. If we want to express the qualities of a specific song, one way of doing it is to express the song's melodic lines. In this workshop we will look into how to identify a melody, how to listen to particular instruments that play melodic lines, and how to interpret it both as a leader and as a follower. In this class you will work with the notions of phrasing, narrative, energy buildup, pausing, suspension, climaxing and contrasts, which will make your dance richer and more interesting without adding any steps.
Level: Advanced Level
Time: 6pm to 7.30pm
Address: Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion St, N1 9PD

Followed by Milonga Amistosa until 10.30pm.

Masterclass Part 1
Theme: Stretching the elastic: "nuevo" style and using the rebounding energy
Description: In this masterclass we will work on a specific technique from the "nuevo" style figures called the "elastic rebound". It is a difficult technique that requires both partners to work with the notion of a moving axis, weight, inertia and elasticity of the embrace. Without necessarily changing our style all the way to "nuevo", we can use this technique to add more organic and flowy qualities to our open (and even close) embrace dancing. This technique is particularly challenging because it requires us to relinquish a fixed "styled" embrace shape and bring an elastic quality to our arms. We will study this technique on the typical nuevo vocabulary such as linear and circular rebounds, but also ochos and sacadas.
Level: Advanced Level
Time: 12pm to 1.30pm
Address: Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion St, N1 9PD

Masterclass Part 2
Theme: Turbo-pivots: extreme spirals for sacadas, ganchos and voleos
Description: In this masterclass we will apply the principle of the "elastic energy" from part 1 to leading and dancing overturned front and back pivots (the "turbo-pivot") for both roles. This technique will give us the possibility of leading and dancing overturned front and back sacadas, as well as lead and dance voleos and ganchos with the maximal degree of rotation in the hips. Extreme degree of pivot is used when dancing in open embrace, which automatically requires more space for the couple and brings with it a more complex navigational challenge.
Level: Advanced Level
Time: 1.30pm to 3.00pm
Address: Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion St, N1 9PD

Followed by half an hour of practice time.

Social
Time:
3.30pm to 5.00pm

Workshop 3 - Intermediate level workshop
Theme: Giving & taking space
Description: We are used to thinking of tango as a dance in which every single follower's movement, except for the embellishments, are led by the leader. But the more we advance in our learning, the more we realise that often it is rather a play of giving and taking space for creativity, letting go of a strict "leader/follower dynamic". In this workshop we will look into various ways for the leaders to give followers space to express themselves more freely and for the followers to take that space, but also to suggest when a space could be given. We will work on these ideas in pauses and paradas, but also in dynamic movements such as calesitas and crosses. All this without cutting the flow and without losing the connection. This will allow the followers to be way more active and the leaders to get way less bored with themselves!
Level: Intermediate Level
Time: 6pm to 7.30pm
Address: Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion St, N1 9PD

Followed by Milonga Simpatica until 10.30pm.

There are milongas each day after the workshops at each location. When booking for a workshop, the price of the milonga is included.
