Beginners Crash Course

BEGINNERS CRASH COURSE

Learn the foundations of Argentine Tango in just one afternoon.

Curious about tango but not sure where to begin?

Our Beginners Crash Course is designed for complete beginners who want to experience Argentine Tango without committing to a full course straight away.

In just three hours, you’ll learn the core concepts that we normally teach over our 7-week Beginners Course. It’s an enjoyable, relaxed and structured introduction that gives you a genuine feel for the dance and a strong foundation to continue learning if you choose.

You don’t need any dance experience.

You don’t need to bring a partner.

Many of our students come on their own, and partner rotation throughout the class means everyone gets the chance to dance, meet new people and learn comfortably together.

More than anything, this is a chance to spend an afternoon doing something different. Tango is a wonderfully social dance, and our classes are known for being friendly, welcoming and supportive. Many people who first came along on their own are now part of our regular community.

During the Crash Course you’ll:

  • Learn the essential foundations of Argentine Tango
  • Build confidence dancing with different partners
  • Experience a structured introduction equivalent to our 7-week beginners programme
  • Meet friendly, like-minded people
  • Discover whether tango is something you’d like to continue exploring

Who is it for?

  • Complete beginners
  • Anyone who’s always wanted to try tango
  • People looking for a new social hobby
  • Individuals and couples alike

No previous dance experience is required.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

The 7 Concepts We Will Cover

Rather than teaching you a collection of sequences to memorise, our Beginners Crash Course introduces you to the building blocks of Argentine Tango. You’ll learn how partners communicate, how movements are created, and how familiar tango figures such as ochos, crosses, the ocho cortado and the media luna naturally emerge from these simple ideas.

01

Connection, Communication & Walking

Tango begins with connection. You’ll discover how two people communicate through the embrace and how subtle changes in the body can create clear, comfortable movement together. We’ll introduce the essential principles behind leading and following and use them to develop a natural, connected tango walk.

02

Pivots – The Foundation of Ochos

Rather than simply memorising a Forward Ocho or Back Ocho sequence, you’ll learn the mechanics that make ochos possible. We explore how a pivot is communicated and executed in both directions, giving you the foundations to understand and create Forward and Back Ochos naturally with a partner.

03

Changing Lanes – Creating Movement Together

You’ll discover how partners can move between different pathways or “lanes” while dancing. Once you understand this simple idea, movements that might otherwise seem complicated begin to appear naturally – including patterns such as the Media Luna. Instead of memorising the figure, you’ll understand how it is created.

04

Rebounds & Changes of Direction

Rebounds introduce the playful idea of changing direction during a movement. You’ll learn how to communicate and respond to them, and how they can connect naturally with other elements of tango. Familiar figures such as the Ocho Cortado become possible combinations of concepts you already understand rather than another sequence you need to remember.

05

Crosses

The Cross is one of tango’s most recognisable movements. We’ll explore what a cross actually is, how it is created between two partners, and the different possibilities available to you. The aim is not to memorise “the Cross sequence”, but to understand the movement well enough to recognise and create crosses naturally.

06

Axis, Projection & the Calesita

You’ll explore the idea of balance and axis – how one partner can remain beautifully centred while the other moves around them. From this simple principle, you’ll discover movements such as the Calesita (Carousel) and begin to understand how tango can flow around a shared centre.

07

Putting It Together – Your First Improvised Tango

This is where everything begins to connect. Walking, pivots, lane changes, rebounds, crosses and changes of axis become ingredients you can combine in different ways. Rather than remembering choreography, you’ll begin to lead, follow and create your own dance together with the music.

By the end of the course, you won’t simply know a handful of tango sequences. You’ll have begun to understand how Argentine Tango works – giving you a foundation from which you can continue learning, improvising and dancing with different partners.
