Haris Mihail & Natasha Lewinger return to London — classes, Halloween and Thriller
Haris Mihail and Natasha Lewinger are coming back to London—and when these two are here, it never feels like an ordinary teaching residency.
From 19 October to 12 November 2026, they will be teaching across the Tango Amistoso programme, bringing their distinctive mix of connection, musicality, technique—and a wonderful sense of fun.

They are beautiful dancers and thoughtful teachers, but anyone who has experienced one of their London visits knows there is another side to the story too: classes, milongas and the time around them take on a party atmosphere. People learn seriously, dance a lot, spend time together—and somehow there is usually something unexpected happening.
Why learn with Haris and Natasha?
Haris and Natasha have each danced tango for more than 15 years and have worked together since 2016. Their dancing is known for its connection, elegance, musicality, dynamics and quality, with a strong love for social tango and the milonguero tradition.
Technique matters deeply to them, but always as a way to improve connection and communication between two dancers. They describe their ideal as dancing like “one body with four legs”—and that sense of shared movement is at the heart of both their dancing and their teaching.

These sessions are arranged separately and are not booked through the Tango Amistoso website. To find out more or reserve a place, please contact Haris directly.
FRIDAY 30 OCTOBER
A Halloween Friday to remember 🎃
Milonga Maitri becomes a Halloween costume milonga, with a special show from Haris and Natasha. Their previous Halloween performances have been brilliantly imaginative—they never approach the theme half-heartedly—and we cannot wait to see what they create this time.
- Halloween costumes and a full party atmosphere
- A special performance by Haris and Natasha
- A student performance of their choreography to Michael Jackson’s Thriller
The regular Friday classes that evening will be taught by Mauro Alejandro Mol and Isavella Georgopoulou, giving Haris and Natasha time to prepare for their show.
Want to join the “Thriller” performance?
A group of students will learn Haris and Natasha’s choreography to Michael Jackson’s Thriller and perform it on Halloween night.
Contact Haris and Natasha directly if you would like to take part. If you need help getting in touch, email info@tango-amistoso.co.uk.
Come for the learning. Stay for the atmosphere.
This residency is not only a chance to learn from two outstanding tango dancers. It is an invitation to spend several weeks dancing together, meeting people from across the London tango community and enjoying the energy that Haris and Natasha create whenever they are here.

Let’s give Haris and Natasha another wonderful London welcome—and make this residency one long stretch of learning, dancing and fun. ❤️

Why Is Dancing So Good for Your Brain?
Listen to the music, find your balance, notice your partner and decide where the next step can go. Even a simple tango asks for your attention. That combination of movement, learning and connection is a good reason to be curious about dancing and the brain, while keeping the health claims in perspective.
There is plenty to pay attention to
In Argentine tango, you work with another person rather than carrying out every movement on your own. You listen for the beat and changes in the music, coordinate your steps and adjust to the space around you. Both partners have an active part in that conversation.
A familiar movement can become a fresh challenge when you try it at a different speed or with a different partner. You might practise transferring your weight, then discover how a small pause changes the feeling of a phrase. These are concrete skills you can learn and refine, one at a time.
It is also perfectly normal for a new idea to feel awkward at first. Give yourself room to repeat it, ask a question and try again. You do not need a large collection of steps to enjoy making a few simple movements feel comfortable.
What does the research actually show?
The US National Institute on Aging describes research into activities including dance, music and creative writing as promising, but says lasting benefits for thinking and memory have not been established definitively. Keeping mentally and socially engaged can be part of looking after yourself; a dance class cannot promise protection against dementia.
Results also need to be read carefully. In an eight-month randomised trial comparing ballroom dancing with walking, 115 older adults were allocated to the two groups and 79 completed follow-up testing. The main analysis did not find an overall difference between the groups. The study did not support a claim that dancing was better than walking for executive functions, the thinking skills involved in managing tasks.
That trial involved older adults and ballroom dancing. It cannot tell us that Argentine tango has the same effects, or that results would apply to every age group. The pleasure of learning tango is a sound reason to try it without turning it into a medical promise.
Start with curiosity
Choose one thing to explore in a lesson: hearing the beat, making a comfortable weight change or listening more closely to your partner. Small discoveries give you something tangible to practise.
If you would like to begin, have a look at our beginner tango classes in London and current weekly programme. Come ready to learn, and let the dancing develop at your own pace.
How To Choose A Dance Studio
A good dance school helps you feel comfortable enough to learn, ask questions and come back. Before choosing one, think about what you want from dancing: a weekly social activity, a new skill, performance opportunities or simply time with music and other people. Those goals will help you judge whether a class is a good fit.
Start with a class designed for beginners
If you are new to Argentine tango, look for a clear introduction to walking, balance, the embrace and listening to the music. Ask what a first lesson involves and whether you can join at any point or need to start with a course. An impressive demonstration can be inspiring, but the useful question is how the teacher helps someone who has never danced before.
A beginner class should give you time to try things, make mistakes and understand the foundations. You should leave with something manageable to practise rather than feeling that you need to remember a long sequence.
Notice how the teachers teach
Look for explanations you can follow, demonstrations from useful angles and attention to both dance roles. Helpful feedback is specific and respectful. Questions should be welcome, and nobody should be embarrassed for finding something difficult.
Ask how the school helps students progress. A clear next step is useful, whether that means repeating a foundation class, attending a practice session or moving to another level when you are ready.
Check the atmosphere and partner arrangements
Partner dancing involves personal space and touch, so comfort matters. Find out whether you need to bring a partner, how partner changes work and whether you can discuss the role you want to learn. You should be able to ask for more space, decline a partner change or pause without pressure.
Pay attention to how newcomers are welcomed. A friendly introduction, a clear explanation of the class and someone available for questions can make the first visit much easier.
Make the practical details work
Check the actual venue for your chosen class, travel time, accessibility, session length and what to wear. Ask about suitable footwear and any access needs before you book. Compare the full cost of your likely attendance, including course conditions, subscriptions, missed classes and cancellation terms. Choose an arrangement you understand and can comfortably sustain.
Look for opportunities to practise
Classes and social dancing offer different kinds of experience. Ask whether there is a beginner-friendly practice session, often called a práctica, and how the school introduces students to milongas, the social events where tango is danced. You can also ask whether it is possible to watch before joining in.
Try a first class in London
Tango Amistoso offers classes for complete beginners, with no partner or previous dance experience needed. Check the current weekly programme for venues, times and booking links. Start with a session that fits your week, then judge it by how clearly you were taught and how comfortable you felt learning.
Dance Your Way to Good Health
A regular dance class can give you a welcome reason to get moving: music to enjoy, something new to learn and people to share it with. Argentine tango can be part of an active week, with a pace and level of challenge that you build up over time.
The health benefits depend partly on how much you move and how hard you are working. A lesson spent exploring technique, with pauses for explanations, is different from a sustained spell of social dancing. It is worth making that distinction when thinking about exercise.
How dancing fits into an active week
The NHS guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64 recommend at least 150 minutes of moderate activity or 75 minutes of vigorous activity each week, or a suitable combination. They also recommend strengthening all the major muscle groups on at least two days a week and breaking up long periods of sitting.
Dancing appears among the NHS examples of moderate activity. A useful check is your breathing: at moderate intensity, you can talk but would struggle to sing. A tango session may include lighter periods, so the whole time on the timetable does not automatically count towards that target.
Think of tango alongside the other movement you enjoy. Walking, cycling or swimming might help you build a varied routine. Include suitable strength exercises too, rather than assuming dance covers every muscle group. For adults aged 65 and over, NHS guidance also emphasises activities for balance and flexibility on at least two days each week.
Enjoyment helps you keep coming back
A class creates a regular opportunity to put your phone away, meet people and spend time with music. You can enjoy the small milestones: a walk that feels steadier, a rhythm you recognise or a movement that begins to make sense.
The NHS advice on activity and mental wellbeing highlights mood, confidence and social connection, and encourages choosing something you enjoy. Those benefits vary from person to person. There is no need to turn every evening of dancing into a fitness test.
Give yourself a comfortable start
Begin with a manageable amount and build gradually. Take breaks, drink water and tell your teacher about any movement you need to adapt. Wear comfortable clothes and ask about suitable footwear before your first class. Avoid pushing through pain.
If you have not exercised for some time, or have a medical condition or concerns, the NHS advises speaking to your GP first. Choose activity that suits your fitness and circumstances.
Ready to give tango a try? Explore our beginner classes and weekly schedule to find a place to start.
Dance As a Form of Exercise
Social tango combines movement, music and conversation without words. A class gives you a regular reason to move, practise new skills and spend time with other people.
What you practise when you dance
Even a simple tango walk asks you to notice your balance, transfer your weight clearly and coordinate your movement with a partner. As you learn, you explore changes of direction, turns, pauses and different speeds. The aim is comfortable, controlled movement rather than forcing a large step or a difficult shape.
Movement at your own pace
A social dance can be gentle or more energetic, depending on the music, the space and the choices of both dancers. You do not need elaborate figures to enjoy it. Walking to the rhythm and sharing an attentive embrace are worthwhile skills at every level.
Start with a class suited to your experience, wear comfortable shoes and take breaks when you need them. Tell your teacher about any movement you find uncomfortable so they can help you adapt the exercise.
The social side matters too
Classes and milongas create opportunities to meet people, recognise familiar faces and build a routine you enjoy. A milonga is a social tango evening; beginners can first come along to watch and become familiar with the music and the floor.
Explore our beginner classes, read about the different class levels, or check the current timetable to find your starting point.
