Beyond the Basics: Why Your Tango Journey Never Ends (And How We Keep It Exciting)

Beyond the Basics: Why Your Tango Journey Never Ends (And How We Keep It Exciting)
There’s a beautiful moment in every tango dancer’s journey. It’s the moment you step onto the milonga floor not with anxiety, but with confidence. The steps are in your body, you can navigate the floor, and you can create a wonderful dance with a partner. You’ve arrived.
This is a huge achievement, and it’s often at this very point that a new question arises: “Do I still need to take classes?” The cost and time of a class can seem less appealing than the pure joy of a milonga.
We believe that this moment of confidence isn’t the destination; it’s the true beginning of your artistic journey. This article is about embracing the idea of tango as a never-ending path of discovery and how we at Amistoso have designed a system to keep that journey exciting, affordable, and deeply rewarding for even the most experienced dancers.
Part 1: The Never-Ending Journey of Tango
Why continue with formal learning when you can already dance well socially? Because tango is not a finite skill to be mastered, but a language to be explored. Once you know the basic words and grammar, the real joy comes from learning to write poetry.
Here are the infinite realms that open up to an experienced dancer:
1. From Vocabulary to Artistry
A beginner learns steps (the vocabulary). An intermediate dancer learns to combine them into sequences (the sentences). An advanced dancer, however, learns to play with the texture of the dance. They explore the subtleties of the pause, the dynamics of an acceleration, and the nuances of the connection that turn a simple walk into a profound conversation. This is the shift from execution to artistry.
2. The Infinite Depths of Musicality
At first, we learn to dance on the beat. But soon we discover that this is just the first layer. The journey into musicality is endless. Can you dance to the melody as well as the rhythm? Can you interpret the singer’s emotion? Can you express the dramatic tension of Pugliese, the playful staccato of D’Arienzo, and the sweeping romance of Di Sarli? Every orchestra, every song, is a new universe to explore, and a class is the laboratory where you can learn to navigate them.
3. The Evolving Connection
The connection in tango is a living thing. As an advanced dancer, you move beyond the mechanics of leading and following. You learn to listen on a deeper level—to your partner’s breathing, their balance, their energy. You learn to propose ideas rather than give commands, and to respond with creativity rather than mere obedience. This level of connection requires constant refinement and practice in a focused learning environment.
Part 2: Your Journey, Evolved: The Amistoso Approach
We understand the challenges faced by experienced dancers. You need more than just new steps, and you need a structure that fits into your life. That’s why we’ve rebuilt our advanced program from the ground up.
1. Removing the Financial Barrier: The Subscription Model
The single biggest change we’ve made is our subscription model. We wanted to remove the “cost vs. milonga” calculation from your decision-making. With a subscription, you can say “yes” to learning. You can drop into a class on a Tuesday or a Thursday without a second thought, making consistent learning an easy and affordable part of your tango life.
2. A Curriculum for the Advanced Dancer
Our Advanced Level Classes on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays are specifically designed for dancers with years of experience. We don’t just teach new sequences; we dive deep into the concepts that elevate your dancing. These classes are your dedicated time to work on musical interpretation, advanced technique, and the quality of your connection among a peer group that will challenge and inspire you.
3. A Constant Stream of Fresh Inspiration
Stagnation is the enemy of progress. To ensure your learning never gets stale, we frequently host world-class visiting teachers in our regular advanced slots. This brings fresh perspectives, new ideas, and a direct connection to the global tango scene right here in London. It’s a chance to be inspired by the best, without having to travel the world to find them.
Part 3: Practical Details of Your Advanced Journey
To help you on this continuous path, we’ve designed our advanced program with specific goals in mind. Here’s a look at the weekly schedule and the philosophy behind each class format, allowing you to choose the path that best suits your personal goals.
Tuesdays & Thursdays: The Deep Dive (Partner Required)
These classes are your laboratory for focused, in-depth work. By requiring you to come with a partner, we create a consistent environment where you can tackle complex techniques that require repetition and mutual understanding. This format allows for faster progress on challenging material and helps you build a strong connection with a regular practice partner.
- Tuesdays: 8:30 PM – 10:00 PM (+ Practica) at Claremont Project, 24-27 White Lion St, Islington, N1 9PD
- Thursdays: 8:00 PM – 9:30 PM (+ Practica) at Soho School of Burlesque, 4A Streatham St, London, WC1A 1JB
Saturdays: The Social Dancer’s Lab & Community Hub (Drop-In Welcome)
This class is your training ground for the real-world milonga. The drop-in format is designed to hone your adaptability and responsiveness with a variety of partners. It’s also the perfect opportunity to meet fellow dedicated dancers and find a partner for our partner-required classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The class is followed by our milonga, so you can immediately put your skills into practice.
- Saturdays: 6:15 PM (Tango Unlimited) & 7:30 PM (Advanced) + Milonga
- Location: 10 Herbal Hill, London, EC1R 5EG
Your tango journey should never feel like it has an end point. It is a path of continuous discovery, and our goal at Tango Amistoso is to be your partner for every step of that journey. We invite you to find the blend that works for you and join our dedicated community of lifelong learners.

What is Tango Unlimited?
Tango Unlimited is Tango Amistoso’s own specialised class for exploring dancing and music outside the norms of traditional salon tango, pushing the boundaries of what tango can look and feel like. In these classes, we’ll draw on bold and exciting traditions established and developed by artists and dancers such as Chicho Frumboli, Gustavo Naveiro and Giselle Anne, and practiced by a stunning array of dancers today. Visiting Amistoso teachers have been a massive source of inspiration for our Tango Unlimited classes, including Tymoteusz Ley and Agnieszka Stach, Loukas Balokas and Georgia Priskou, Giorgos Nikou and Katerina Chatzipanteli, and Tomas Corbalan.
To give you an idea, here is a video of the demo from one of the Tango Unlimited classes:

Tango Unlimited Classes are available for Intermediate and Advanced Level Dancers starting from Intermediate Level 1. Please check the level guide in the website if you are not sure about your level. Classes happen on Saturdays 4.30pm to 6pm. Please join this WhatsApp group chat if you are interested in joining.
https://chat.whatsapp.com/Cpkg4TiBkCxAhUJdeynOYz
The classes are included within the regular subscription options for Intermediate and Advanced Level. If you would like to do a drop in, you can book as usual using the website.
https://www.tango-amistoso.co.uk/weekly-schedule

As part of Tango Unlimited classes, you’ll focus on less conventional or perhaps totally new tango movements, ranging from elastic colgadas and soltadas to dips and even aerial lifts, learning how to incorporate these into your dance as a fluid extension of more familiar tango steps. Tango Unlimited is all about improvisation, listening and connecting to your partner in order to achieve something spectacular together. And, by innovating and deconstructing tango fundamentals, you’ll actually deepen your understanding of the technical aspects of traditional tango figures, while also forging new ones.
In the Tango Unlimited classes, we’ll draw on more diverse musical traditions, dancing to songs you might not have heard before, or thought about dancing tango to, including modern electronic tango by orquestas such as Otros Aires, or experimenting with dancing to world music. Developing a musical response to new textures and rhythms will greatly enhance your musicality, and broaden your musical world immensely.
Tango Unlimited is all about breaking rules in order to create a tango that is spectacular and modern, while also deeply musical and connected. Come along every Saturday to discover how to elevate your tango to a new level.
Hope to see you in the classes!
London Tango : the story of Ian and Anne
London is diverse and naturally Tango in London is diverse too. I dance in most Central London Milongas most of the times and I have now done it consistently for almost 12 years but Tango in London is bigger than any of us have ever experienced or even likely to experience. Even for someone like me who dances a crazy amount, it is impossible to experience the full scale of Tango in London with all the classes, special workshops, Practicas, Milongas, Festivals, etc just in Central London let alone all the good stuff that happens in the suburbs and just outside London. But I wold like to share some positive stories that I know of and have experienced in London Tango over more than a decade now. So here is the first one… this is the Tango story of Ian and Anne, one of my most favourite people in London Tango. If I walk into a Milonga and see Ian and Anne there, which is practically most of the times, it definitely brightens me up an extra notch. One, there is the guaranteed joyful tanda with Anne and the other, I can always catch up on a bit of cricket with Ian. Unfortunately, most of you Tango people are from non commonwealth countries and usually have no idea of cricket, so people like Ian are like a treasure for me! I think I started dancing with Anne regularly about 7 years ago. Apart from the beautiful disassociation during her pivots, the first thing that stuck me about Anne was her knowledge of Tango music and her ability to pinpoint the orchestra of the Tanda we are dancing to. Talking to Ian and listening to Ian talk about dancing to the Vocalist or Troilo’s bandoneon it became clear that they are both obsessed with Tango music!
Their Tango journey:
They had their first Tango lesson in 2002 while living in the Cornish country side. And guess who their teachers were… it was none other than our own Corrientes duo Mina and Giraldo! Apparently, there was some sort of Tango Festival around that time and Mina and Giraldo had made a trip there and Ian and Anne got hooked up. After Mina and Giraldo returned back to London, Ian and Anne desperately tried to keep up by starting to buy loads of Tango CDs, watching videos, etc. (Side note: There was definitely a charm in collecting Tango music in CDs. Because of the limited nature of the collection, we tend to make a stronger connection with the Orchestras. These days of course we have Spotify, iTunes, YouTube, etc.)They then moved to Bristol, where they continued with their Tango and in 2011 decided to move to London, part of the reason being Tango. Since then they have been a regular fixture in our Milongas 2 to 3 times every week! They have been super nice to everyone and most importantly they are there in the Milongas week after week.
Favourite orchestras:
Anne: Fresedo (for the cheesy romantic music!)
Ian: Pedro Laurenz, Troilo
Favourite London Milongas:
The old Negracha, Etnia
Non Tango facts:
Ian was a lecturer in an Arts school, Did/does Painting, Still displays his work in Arts exhibitions in London and is also a Jazz musician.Anne worked in Education and Designed jewellery.
Highlight:
The beauty of their Tango journey is how Tango allowed them to reconnect with each other. They were/are active people all the time but their activities were separate from each other but since picking up Tango as a common hobby, they feel like they have connected with each other more!
Quote (from Ian):
“Don’t chase the music, let the music guide you”.
If you really care about London Tango, there is no bigger contribution that you can do than being there in our Milongas much like Ian and Anne. And when you see them next, say a hello and surprise them with facts from above.
